TIMEPIECE OF THE WEST

When it comes to the Galway Hooker, there is more than meets the eye.

Behind its red sails is a rich history dating back to the 19th century, when local fishermen harvested herring in the rich waters of Galway Bay on workboats designed to weather any storm.

A Galway Hookers in the Bay

Built of a strong timber oak frame, the Galway Hooker is a direct descendent of the currach, whose design is unique to the coastal towns of Connaught. These sailing vessels have played a vital role in the maritime history of Connemara, a region of rolling hills and unforgiving boglands.

It is identified by its sharp, clean entry, bluff bow, marked tumblehome and raked transom. Its sail plan consists of a single mast with a main sail and two foresails.

Spanish Arch

Since the days of the Spanish Armada running aground on the west coast of Ireland on their way to conquer England, these boats were the lifeblood of the local economy by conducting trade along the Atlantic coast and connecting the people of the Aran Islands to Galway City.

The world moved on to roads and air travel and boats were no longer relied upon to carry the freight of the local economy.

Galway City found a friend across the Atlantic and Ireland’s bright future was at hand.

For many years these boats languished in the harbour and the builders’ craft was in danger of being lost to history, only to be revived by a new generation of enthusiasts unwilling to lose a cornerstone of Irish heritage to the past.

Whether you man the sails of the Galway Hooker, sand the wood of the hurley, or weld the Claddagh Ring, Ireland is a place of shared and long-lasting passion for its very own crafts.
