Built of a strong timber oak frame, the Galway Hooker is a direct descendent of the currach, whose design is unique to the coastal towns of Connaught. These sailing vessels have played a vital role in the maritime history of Connemara, a region of rolling hills and unforgiving boglands.
It is identified by its sharp, clean entry, bluff bow, marked tumblehome and raked transom. Its sail plan consists of a single mast with a main sail and two foresails.

Since the days of the Spanish Armada running aground on the west coast of Ireland on their way to conquer England, these boats were the lifeblood of the local economy by conducting trade along the Atlantic coast and connecting the people of the Aran Islands to Galway City.
